Entrepreneurship is often seen as a pursuit of innovation, wealth, or independence. For me, it’s something more profound. It’s a continuation of my family’s traditions—an extension of the values and connections that shaped my childhood in Malaysia. My journey as the founder of Chajia Co., a tea marketplace dedicated to supporting small tea businesses, is deeply rooted in the simple yet powerful lessons I learnt around my family’s kitchen table.

Growing up, tea wasn’t just a drink in our home; it was a ritual that brought people together. My Grandpa, the heart of our family, always had a kettle of tea brewing. It wasn’t fancy or elaborate, but it was constant—an invitation to connect. Friends, neighbours, and family members would stop by, often unannounced, to share a cup of tea. Around that tea kettle, we laughed, shared stories, and created memories that was the patchwork of our community.
What I learned during those moments was the importance of connection and generosity. My grandpa didn’t have much, but he had tea, and he shared it freely. He showed me that the most valuable things in life aren’t material—they’re the relationships we nurture and the ways we bring joy to others.
Years later, as I found myself drawn to the idea of starting a business, these lessons came flooding back. I wanted to create something that felt as welcoming and meaningful as those moments in my childhood. I also wanted to support others—just as my grandpa supported our community. That’s when the idea for Chajia Co. was born: a marketplace that celebrates tea not just as a product, but as a tradition that brings people together.
Building a business rooted in family values hasn’t just shaped my approach—it’s given me purpose. Every aspect of Chajia Co. reflects what I hold dear: supporting small, passionate tea producers; creating a space for connection; and honouring the stories behind every cup of tea.
Starting and running a business is challenging, but I’ve found strength in the lessons my family taught me:
- Focus on community: Success isn’t just about what you achieve—it’s about what you give back. At Chajia Co., we’re dedicated to helping independent tea producers thrive.
- Celebrate the small moments: Just like those cups of tea in my childhood, small gestures and consistent efforts can lead to big impact.
- Stay rooted in your values: When the journey gets tough, returning to your “why” keeps you grounded and inspired.
I hope my story inspires others to look at their own experiences and see the potential for something greater. Entrepreneurship isn’t just about creating something new; it’s about taking the lessons and traditions that shaped you and finding ways to share them with the world.
Through Chajia Co., I’ve had the privilege of not only sharing my love for tea but also supporting passionate tea producers and fostering a community of tea enthusiasts. The joy I see in customers discovering new teas or learning about the stories behind them reminds me why I started this journey.
To anyone considering their own entrepreneurial journey: look to your roots, honour your story, and build something that reflects who you are. You never know who you might inspire—or how far your story will travel. For me, it all started with a kettle. Where will your story begin?
